Polymath

The autodidact answers to no institution. That is the advantage, and it is the whole of the discipline. There is no syllabus to hide behind, no degree to substitute for the work, no committee to blame for the method. Every canon is a hypothesis. Every credential you claim is either the work or it is nothing.

The dangers are specific. Breadth worn as depth is tourism. Depth without breadth is a cellar. Curiosity is a temperament, and temperament is not a method. The autodidactic polymath is made by what survives those failures: a course that answers to a question rather than a department, and hours no one assigns and no one checks.

The method is adversarial by design. Sources are guilty until verified, and verified again. A field is entered without permission and without a guide, and it is left only when its accounting closes. The gate is narrow. No one holds it open, and no one can close it for you.

What you are building has no name, no department, no transcript. That is not a lack. It is the point.
